ADAMAS

Adamas with its white buildings set in relief against a blue background, is a seaside village with approximately 1,000 inhabitants. It is situated in the most protected part of the bay. The port of Adamas is considered as one of the safest in the entire Mediterranean and as such it serves as a yacht supply station. Due to its natural beauty and geographical advantages, it is also the tourist center of the island.

The history of Adamas is quite brief since it was founded by refugees who left the town of Sfakia in Crete in 1824, after an unsuccessful revolt against the Turkish and Egyptian rulers of the island. The village was officially founded in 1835 and since then has played a major role on the island, mainly because of the strategic position of its port.

As a seaside resort, Adamas offers visitors a comfortable, pleasant and unforgetable stay. It has a number of hotels, furnished apartments, private rooms, restaurants, taverns, ouzo taverns, pizza restaurants, grills, bars and discos.

There are also tourist agencies and the Olympic Airways office. Moreover, visitors can hire motorbikes and cars and there are daily boat trips around the island. Adamas is undoubtedly the center of the island's night life.

SIGHTSEEING

The churches Koimissis of Theotokos (Assumption of god’s mother - Virgin Mary) and Ayios Charalampos with the icons of Panayia (Virgin Mary) and the church of Ayia Trias (17th century), an architectural exception in Kyklades.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are tavernas, restaurants, pizzerias, grills and cafeterias. And bars, discotheques. Also, traditional festival, with local music and meals at the church, on the 15th of August.

EXCURSIONS - SPORTS

Swim at the sandy beaches of the villages Langada, Bombarda and Papichina. Every day you can visit by boats Emporeio, or to go to the round of the island. Who love sports will rent windsurfs, canoes and sea - bikes. In the port there are posts to moor your boat.

TRANSPORTS

From Adamas run buses to Triovassalo - Plaka - Trypiti, Apollonia, Zephyria - Palaeochori, Chivadolimni, Provata. By boat you can go to Emporeio. There are taxis and shops to rent a car and motorcycles.

PLAKA

Plaka is the capital of the island, built on a plateau below Castro with extraordinary view.

After the final destuction and evacuation of Zephyria (Palea Hora = Old Hora) in 1776 which had been the capital of the island, Plaka grew considerably.

It is a picturesque village with typical Cycladic architecture, paved narrow streets and court yards filled with flowers which create a pleasant atmosphere.

Both the Archaeological and Folk Museums are in Plaka as well as the churches of Panagia Korfiatisa, Panagia Thalasitra and Mesa Panagia with their rich tradition.

The Archaeological Museum (open daily from 08.30 to 15.00 except for Monday) exhibits a replica of the statue of the Venus de Milo which was made in the Louvre Museum. There are numerous other exhibits representative of the long and rich history of the island.

The Folk Museum (open daily from 10.00 to 13.00 and 18.00 to 20.00 except for Monday and Sunday) is one of the finest in the country. Models display Miloan costumes which indicate the social status of the island in the 17th century and afterwards.

In Plaka one can find the Health Center providing 24-hour health care as well as pharmacies, the post office, the telephone office and the police station.

From Castro, which was inhabited after the destruction of ancient Klima but mainly during the medieval period, we can enjoy superb sunsets.

Near Plaka are the villages of Plakes, Triovasalos, Pera Triovasalos and Tripiti. All four of them are characterised by typical cycladic architecture, vivid contrasts and abundant traditional churches. Moreover, in the area of ancient Klima and near Tripiti we can still see the well preserved Roman marble theatre. The Christian Catacombs (open daily from 08.45 to 14.00 except for Wednesday and Sunday) are nearby on the same hillside which commands a breathtaking view across the Gulf of Milos.

Visitors should not fail to see the fishing villages of Klima, Fourkovouni, Areti, Firopotamos and Mandrakia which have a unique style of folk architecture.

 


POLLONIA

Pollonia Village in Milos island.

Pollonia is another attractive seaside village of fishermen, situated in the North East part of the island at a distance of 13 kms from Plaka. It is famous for its clean coasts. It has a number of modern buildings with furnished rooms and apartments, restaurants and taverns.

Not far from Pollonia one can see the ruins of the ancient city of Phylakopi and next to it is the impressive Cave of Papafranga with its small beach.

From Pollonia, by boat you can visit the beautiful islets Glaronnissia (Seagull Islands). These islands of rare beauty are made up of thousands of prismatic columns rising majestically out of the sea.

SIGHTSEEING

The Ancient Phylakopi, with the important finds that testify that it was the first settled town of the Protocycladic Age.

ENTERTAINMENT

There are tavernas and cafeterias, bars and discos. Traditional festival on the 26th of July, Ayia Paraskevi.

EXCURSIONS - SPORTS

Milos is an ideal island for exploring. You can hire a boat to take you at many lonely beaches and arrange the time he will come to take you back. There, at your «private» beach you will enjoy the clear sea and the Aegean sun as nowhere else.

You can also go to the cave Papafranga, composed of three different caves. It’s an ideal place for swimming, with deep green sea and golden sandy beach, used in old times as a refuge by the pirates. There, you will see the impressive cliffs of the islets Glaronnissia.

To Glaronnissia you can go by boat. They are deserted islets emerging from the deep sea water creations of the volcanic inspiration, some of them higher than 20 metres. Here there are also sea - caves with green water.

ANTIMILOS

An islet that has been a National Park for the rare species of a wild goat.

At the north side of the gulf of Milos and opposite to Antimilos, there are the volcanic islets, Arcadias.

 


CHIVADOLIMNI

In the Greek, «Achivada» is the word for some species of shell, the Clams. And «limni» is the word for «lake». So, «(A)chivadolimni» means «Lake of clams»: Behind the most beautiful beach of the island there is a little lake, where you will see thousands of clams to decorate its bottom.

EXCURSIONS - SPORTS

You will swim at the endless beach of the settlement, the most beautiful of the island.

In Chivadolimni there are spas, proper for many diseases. From here, you can take the road for the southest coasts of Milos, where there are the caves, "Emerald Caves", "Sykia", "Kleftiko" and "Marine Meteors"

KLIMA

Klima Village of Milos island.

A little fishermen village, known for the catacombs and "syrmata" - little houses on the cliffs - with main colours the white, blue and red. It’s 2 kms far from Plaka.

SIGHTSEEING

The famous catacombs. It’s about a unique monument, composed of many subterranean corridors, 185 m. long, where the first christians were hiding themselves and the objects of their worship and in there were burying their dead in sliding tombs in the walls of the corridors, in the time of the Persecutions.

The Ruins of the Theatre (3rd century), where in 1820 had been discovered the Statue of the goddess Aphroditi (Aphrodite, or Venus) of Milos.

Do not miss the Leitourghia (Mass) in the Catacombs on the 9th of June.

ZEPHYRIA

The medieval capital of Milos. It’s 5 kms far from the port. It’s greatest prosperity was in 1400 A.D. and it was destroyed by the earthquakes on the end of the 18th century. It has been also base of operations of pirates.

SIGHTSEEING

The sulphur mines. The Medieval relics of the old town and the church of Panayia Portiani, which used to be the Cathedral of the island.

ENTERTAINMENT

Traditional festival on the 15th of August on the day of Panayia (Virgin Mary).
