The town of Ermoupolis extends around the large, natural harbour and it is distinguished for its imposing beauty of neoclassical marble buildings, of which still, today constitute the architectural decoration and create an admiration for the visitor. On the left hill, above the town is situated the picturesque settlement of Ano Syros, of which until today, the classical medieval architecture has remained untouched over the years.

ERMOUPOLIS (SYROS TOWN)

In the 5th or 6th centuries A.D., Christian churches were built over the remains of the unfinished temple, a common practice at that time. During Frankish rule parts of the temple were used by the Venetian conquerors to build the Kastro in the Chora.

SIGHTSEEING

There are many things you should visit in Ermoupolis:

• The big rectangular shaped "Miaouli Square" with its large palm trees around the imposing statue of Admiral Miaoulis

• The Municipal Theatre "Apollon", built in 1861, which is the same as the Scala of Milano, only in a smaller scale.

• The Town Hall.

• The settlement "Vaporia", with the magnificent and impressive buildings which take you back in time.

• The marble church of Agios Nikolaos and the Metropolis.

MUSEUMS

Of particular interest to the visitor is the Archaeological Museum, with several exhibits.

ENTERTAINMENT

Many taverns, ouzeries and restaurants. Nightlife is particularly intense in the many bars and cafes of the town.

TRANSPORTS

Many busses that go to almost all Syros villages. There are taxis and shops to hire a car and motorcycles.

Close to the sea and yet very touristic village with many hotels, camp-sites, bars and discos.

Long, golden beaches completely surround the bay and despite its popularity, Galissas still preserves the old beauty.

KINI

Picturesque fishing village with long beautiful beaches. It is located at a distance of 9 km from Ermoupolis and it is well known for its grapes and good quality wine. It is also famous for its fresh fish and seafood. The sunset in Kini is of unique beauty in its harmony of colors.

Kini is a quite resort and many people visit it even during winter for a quiet weekend, since it is well protected from the wind.

You will enjoy fresh fish in any of the taverns and ouzeries of Kini. Few bars.

• The women Monastery of Agia Varvara, from which you can buy beautiful handwoven materials.

ANO SYROS

The narrow labyrinthine alleys are its main characteristic. All white houses are springing up, one next to the other, dressed in flowers. It is in Ano Syros that Marcos Vamvakaris, the famous composer of popular music "rebetica" was born.

The first Venetian town was built at the upper hill and all houses had gates as a fortress, to get protection from pirates, that were spread in the Aegean during that times. The whole town is like a 700 year old museum in our days.

VARI

A large village, at a distance of 9 km from the capital, protected from the north wind with a picturesque bay with lovely beaches and clear water. In Vari one can find beautiful hotels and restaurants, most of which are close to the sea. It is a resort suitable for quiet, family holidays.

In Vari you will find many taverns and ouzeries offering fresh fish and many delicacies. There are also bars and night clubs with live music.

You can swim in the beaches of Vari, Fabrika, Achladi and Azolimnos.

AZOLIMNOS

Close to the sea, Azolimnos is a wonderful holiday resort, which extends around the small picturesque bay. It offers a small beautiful beach.

FINIKAS

Parallel to the sea, this fish village has many tavernas, cafes, bar and hotels. The large bay, sheltered from the north winds is ideal for water sports and a safe shelter for yachts.

POSSIDONIA or DELLAGRACIA

Villas and towers have been built in and around this very green area full of pine trees, which bring back beautiful memories to the visitor of the lovely village and of the "Belle Epoque" of Syros. There also exists the open bay of Agathopes with superb white beaches which strech for many meters into the shallow waters.

Possidonia is 13 km away from Ermoupolis.

MEGAS YIALOS

Sheltered picturesque bay with beautiful sand, which is surrounded by many trees which offer ample shade covering the beach. The clear, blue waters, and the new hotels and tavernas complete the picture of this area.

Megas Yialos was not accessible for many years and, once the asphalt road was constructed, it became one of the most famous resorts of the island. It is only 12 km from Ermoupolis.
