ANDROS TOWN

Andros is an exception among Kyklades, in what

compose the landscape of Andros.
The second largest kykladic island is located
to the northest of Kyklades and only 7 naut. miles far from
the Cape Kaphereus - known as Cavo Doro - of Euboia. The
great shipping tradition of the island (still alive) gives to
nobility. In Andros live many families of ship owners, captains
and sailors. |

HISTORY
According to the mythology, Andros has got its
name from the son of god Apollon, Andros, who has been the first
inhabitant of the island. Also, here there was worship of the
god Dionysos. The prosperity of Andros, according to the archaeological
finds, is noticed in the Geometrical Age. Zagoria is a town
that testifies this matter. A great development there had been
in the Byzantine Age, too. That has been the time when begun
the great merchant and shipping development of the island and
that continuous untill today. Andros is the island of shipowners |
